I met blogger Ché F.M. while making a shoe purchase; a classic long-wing bloucher in a not so common shade of cognac. She praised my sense of style and a kinship was born. Weeks later I invited her to be my subject and talk about the #menswear explosion that is happening. Everywhere you look on the internet you see a new blog that tries to capture the essence of it all. Ché likes pieces that embody the classic American heritage look. She believes that tailoring to fit is more important than a brand name. Ché's vision is to take that old grandpa style and then remixe it for mass appeal.

New rap phenomenon JoBoy Fresh commissioned me for some promotional work several months ago. He then went off on tour across the country. I was surprised to hear from his camp that he'd been profiled in the September issue of Sister 2 Sister Magazine, which used one of my images for the piece. I need to go pick that up!

Doris J has become one of my favorite natural hair women to work with. It's been almost a year since we last had the opportunity to work together, and we were both looking forward to the collaboration. She has an amazing skin tone, so I thought it would be interesting to have her in white and on a white seamless backdrop. Here are some of my favorites from the day.

Lighting:

One Norman 600 strobe in 60" octobox @ f/8, high and just right of center;

Two Hensel strobes on the backdrop @ +2 stops from model;

Black flags to keep spill from flaring into camera.

Cameras:

Two Pentax 67s, one loaded with Delta 100, one loaded with Kodak Ektar 100.

Shot some film and some Polaroids with model Doris J. Even though I have new school sensibilities and shoot comfortably with digital, I enjoy going old school now and then. As many pros use to do, I've used the Polaroid test shot to check my exposure and light control... and it's just damn cool. You thought Polaroid was gone. Well, you just have to know where to get it.

Film vs. digital...

My previous post of the "Veiled" woman was shot with film. Some days I have trouble deciding which medium I prefer. On this day I wanted to shoot both just to see which result I would like better. The film process takes time. Shoot... lab... wait... pickup... scan... done. The digital process is different; quicker on the front end but extremely time consuming in the post production. You can work on a digital image endlessly! So which do I prefer? Each medium has its merits, and it's impossible to declare an undisputed champion. Each medium is a tool to get the job done. In the end, it's up to the individual to decide.

It seems that I have a loaded blog, but I'm afraid to use it. Well, not afraid. I have lots to say, and lots to show, but I'm so far behind on post production that it seems a sin to blog and not work. I really do need to unclog the channels and get this sh*t flowing!

The images above are of Olia, a Russian beauty with a face that is a joy to shoot. She shoots tall... even though she is only 5'3". I'm sure that I will work with her again.

Haiti is on my heart...

This image is from my first trip to Haiti in 2004. It reminds of the wonderful people, and the beauty of the country that the world is rarely shown.

I am thankful to God that my family members who were caught in the Haiti earthquake are whole, and that we can help them regain what was lost. I am tearful for those who have lost lives, are trapped, and in need of support. As we know from daily reports, the disaster continues. There are many who survived the earthquake, but still cling to life. Relief is needed.

I urge you to donate to relief agencies, specifically those that had a direct presence in Haiti before the disaster. I am attaching links to two such organizations.

Wow... the end of 2009! The year went by so fast. So many wonderful things have happened... the birth of our second child, having my images published for the first time, and major growth in my photography business. I am looking forward to 2010 for so many things... Happiness for the family, good health, and major photography projects. Oh, and let's shoot more film than digital!

An important part in developing my style as a photographer has been engaging in "test shoots". Testing allows me to work on the technical as much as the interpersonal skills needed to shoot people. Much of my testing is with agency models, unsigned talent, and friends and family.

The image here is with Olia, a beautiful Russian model that I've recently tested with. Hopefully there will be more with her soon.

This year I had the opportunity work with friend and couture bridal designer Jean-Ralph Thurin. He is opening his flagship salon for Thurin Atelier in Princeton, NJ in early 2010, and he has commissioned me to shoot his new line. Prior to this, he was featured in the New York Times on November 1, 2009 where two of my images were used to advertise his brand. Bravo Jean-Ralph!
